Issues : Long accents

b. 21

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

Accent on d2-f2 in FC (→GE)

Accent on a1 in FE (→EE)

Long accent on d2-f2, our alternative suggestion

..

The lack of access to [A] makes it impossible to say whether and which of the source versions corresponds to Chopin's intention. Therefore, we regard them as equal, while in the main text we provide the version of the principal source (FC). Our alternative proposal is an attempt at reproducing the [A] notation, which could have caused the observed discrepancy between the sources.

b. 63

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

2 short accents in FC & FE (→EE)

1 short accent in GE1

Long & short accent in GE2

2 long accents suggested by the editors

..

We justify the long accents suggested in the main text by inaccuracies in the reproduction of such accents in other pieces by Chopin both by Fontana (cf., e.g. the Scherzo in B minor, Op. 31, bars 42-43) and by FE.
The absence of an accent in bar 63 must be a mistake by GE1, corrected in GE2 by adding a long accent.

b. 101-103

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

Long accents in FC

Short accent in b. 101 in FE (→EE)

Short accents in GE

..

Instead of the short accent in bar 101, which is present in FC (in Fontana's hand) and FE (→EE), Chopin entered into FC two long accents in bars 101 and 103 (deleting the Fontana accent in bar 101). We include this change in the main text. We consider both accents in GE to be short, although the one in bar 101 is slightly longer than the remaining ones on this page. This difference certainly was not regarded as significant by the persons reading the Mazurka text.

b. 133-136

composition: Op. 30 No. 4, Mazurka in C# minor

4 long accents in FC & FE

3 long accents in GE

4 short accents in EE

..

The four long accents were added to FC by Chopin. In GE1 the first one was overlooked; it is also absent in GE2, in which the adjacent  was removed too. It may mean that there was an attempt to add an accent, which required  to be moved; however, the correction remained unfinished. As accents are also in FE, Chopin most probable wrote them there while proofreading this edition. Reducing marks to the form of common, short accents is frequent in EE and other first editions of Chopin's works.
